If You Smell Gas….

Natural gas has an excellent safety record when it is used properly. Nonetheless, gas sometimes leaks. Here is what the American Gas Association and other experts suggest when you smell gas in a home:

Alert others and leave immediately. Remember: any spark can ignite gas if concentrations are high.

Leave doors open for ventilation, but don’t stop to open windows.

Don’t operate any electrical equipment, including telephones and flashlights.

Call your gas company from a telephone outside the area.

If you smell gas outside a building, call the gas company from outside the area. The most common cause of outside gas leaks is from excavation or construction that disturbs pipelines.
