We are fascinated by the story of Moses and the Burning Bush, inspired by the victory of the Maccabees and Festival of Chanukah, during which a tiny amount of oil miraculously burned in the Holy Temple for eight whole days, and enthralled by Lag B’Omer bonfires sparked by the triumph of Rabbi Akiva and his disciples.
Through the ages, Jewish women have sanctified their faith in the Almighty and drawn spiritual strength and comfort by kindling the Sabbath candles, while Jewish men are encouraged by the saga of the Prophet Daniel, whose faith in G-d delivered him unscathed from the fiery furnace of the King of Babylon.
Chaya Malka Abramson’s unwavering faith in Hashem emerged through fire as well when she walked through a fiery blaze in her home in Jerusalem to save the lives of her three small children and elderly grandmother.
For months after, she hovered near death in excruciating pain in Hadassah Hospital, while her family and friends stormed the Gates of Heaven with fervent prayers and acts of ‘Chesed’ in an effort to ‘annul the evil decree.’
Her story is no less inspiring or miraculous than those of our past. It is a story of Herculean courage in the face of death, of triumph of spirit, faith and unconditional trust in Hashem so powerful that it could withstand the most harrowing emotional and physical trials, and even be strengthened by them.
Chaya Malka Abramson’s story is a story of faith rewarded. Her words are the fire of faith. |

I leaned against the wall, staring out the window at the hills of the city. Exhausted and confused, I kept wondering, where do we go from here? |
